So it’s time to book your car in for a little TLC. But what type? Logbook service or basic service? Major or minor? What’s the difference and how will the warranty be affected? So many questions, and here are the answers.

Basically, a logbook service is a service that is carried out according to the manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific make and model of car. It’s usually conducted every 12 months or 15,000 km – whichever comes first (though the logbook will specify).

These guidelines are recorded in your car’s logbook, which is provided by the manufacturer. The idea is that by following these guidelines, your car will be serviced in the best possible way to maintain its warranty and ensure that it stays in good condition.

This depends on the manufacturer’s guidelines for your particular make and model. Generally, though, a logbook service usually involves:

On the other hand, a basic service is designed to keep your car running smoothly. It typically includes an oil change, filter replacement, and a basic inspection of the car’s major components, such as the brakes, suspension, and tires. A normal service is usually performed based on the car’s age, mileage, or a specific interval, such as every 6 months or 10,000 km.

Sound similar to a logbook service? It is. The only difference is that a logbook service follows the manufacturer’s guidelines, while a basic service involves the mechanic doing what they think needs to be done.

As we’ve mentioned, a minor service is just another term for a basic service, performed – usually – every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres. A major service, by comparison, is performed at the 20,000 or 30,000 kilometre mark, and involves all the checks that a minor service does, but usually involves the replacement of certain parts, like filters and spark plugs. It’s a more comprehensive service.

While your car is under warranty, we’ll always provide a service that is compliant with the manufacturer’s logbook. We would never do anything to void your warranty. And, no, you don’t have to have your car serviced by a dealership to keep your warranty; you can bring your car to us and we’ll provide you with a warranty-approved service.

When it comes down to it, we call it a logbook service when your car is under warranty and we need to make sure we follow the manufacturer’s specifications. When the warranty has lapsed, we call it a basic service, and we follow our experience and intuition.

It amounts to essentially the same service; the objective on both occasions is to keep your car running smoothly and at its best.

Still unsure what type of service your car is need of? Just give us a call and we’ll you know. Whatever is called for, you can rest assured that your car is getting the care it needs.

So it’s time to book your car in for a little TLC.
